Nanyang Technological University (NTU) PhD Positions

Professor Alain Filloux is hosting 2 PhD Positions at Nanyang Technical University (NTU) in Singapore.

Ranked among the world’s top universities, NTU is home to world-class institutes – the National Institute of Education, S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Earth Observatory of Singapore, and Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering.

The students will be hosted at the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Science Engineering (SCELSE).

As of 1 September 2022, Professor Alain Filloux is the new SCELSE director. SCELSE is a Research Centre of Excellence (RCE) funded by MOE, NTU, NUS and NRF, and is world leading in the field of bacterial biofilm ad microbiome.

The two PhD positions are due to start in January 2023 and August 2023. The first position is investigating the mechanism and impact of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa Type VI Secretion System (T6SS). The T6SS is an antibacterial weapon used by P. aeruginosa to kill/outcompete other organisms within a polymicrobial population which helps the bacterium to gain advantage and prevail.

The second position investigates Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm and its role in infection. In particular, it investigates the regulatory networks involving the universal second messenger c-di-GMP whose concentration in the cell is an indicator for the decision-making process that switches between 2 bacterial lifestyles, biofilm and chronic infections on the one hand, or planktonic and acute infection on the other hand.

More information can be found on the SCELSE website. Applications should be made here.
